Meet Cody
Behind the scenes with one of Chris Cakes’ expert flippers.
Some of her first “wow” moments came quickly. Within her first few months, Cody worked events like Chiefs training camp, where KC Wolf flipped pancakes on her grill. That same year, she attended her first Chris Cakes Christmas party, and ended up hanging out with a kangaroo. Moments like those made it clear this wasn’t a typical job or business.
A common question Cody hears when she arrives at a new event is, “Is it just you today?” For people seeing a Chris Cakes event for the first time, it’s surprising to watch how much one flipper can handle. From unloading and setup to cooking fresh food on site, keeping the energy up with pancake flipping and entertainment, and packing everything up at the end, she’s learned how to manage it all smoothly.
On event days, Cody thrives once things are in full swing. She talks about getting into a zone, focused, fast-paced, and fully engaged with the crowd. For her, it’s never just breakfast; it’s about creating an experience. You give people “the ol’ dazzle dazzle,” make them laugh, and impress them with a very specific set of skills. Once the event is up and running, she enjoys when customers lean into the fun, interact with her shenanigans, and banter right back. Kids are the best—a speechless, open-mouth stare says it all. It’s good for them to see you can be anything you want to be.
Along the way, Cody has developed a talent that’s become one of her signatures: pancake art. Among the KC crew, she’s earned a reputation as one of their most creative pancake artists. She’s known for taking everything from company logos and school mascots to local celebrities and seasonal designs; like Chiefs players, reindeer, or a Jayhawk, and turning them into her own creative pancake designs. What started as a creative spinoff alongside the job has become something she’s truly embraced, even creating a dedicated Instagram page so others can follow along with her work.
Team culture is another part of Cody’s experience at Chris Cakes. She describes it as a place with open communication, a real focus on safety and happiness, and leadership that understands the work because they’ve done it themselves. As she puts it, “There’s a lot more throwing food when I’m working with my Chris Cakes coworkers than when I was in an office”—a shift she’s enjoyed.
After ten years with Chris Cakes, being a flipper has taught Cody patience. It’s taught her to breathe a little more and not take herself too seriously. Sometimes what she does makes someone’s day, and it’s always heart warming to know people remember an experience she created. And if she had to sum it all up in one sentence, she says it best, “being a flipper at Chris Cakes is flipping fantastic”.
